The story centers on Lawrence "Larry the Liquidator" Garfield (Danny DeVito), a hedonistic Wall Street corporate raider who specializes in identifying undervalued companies and selling off their assets for profit. His latest target is New England Wire & Cable (NEWC), an 81-year-old family-owned company in a small Rhode Island town.

NEWC is led by Andrew "Jorgy" Jorgenson (Gregory Peck), a benevolent patriarch who prioritizes his employees' livelihoods over modern financial efficiency. To fight the takeover, Jorgy enlists his stepdaughter, Kate Sullivan (Penelope Ann Miller), a high-powered New York lawyer. What follows is a "thrust and parry" of legal and romantic maneuvering, as Larry becomes infatuated with Kate while remaining determined to dismantle her father's company. Key Characters and Performances

Directed by Norman Jewison, is a satirical look at the ruthless world of corporate raiding during the transition from the "greed is good" era of the 1980s to the economic shifts of the early 1990s. Based on the off-Broadway play by Jerry Sterner, the film pits two fundamentally different versions of American capitalism against each other through a battle for control over a small-town factory.
