The Centre tasks Philip and Elizabeth with stopping an East German assassin they previously hired. The KGB has had a change of heart about killing American scientists working on the "Star Wars" missile defense program, fearing it would escalate to an open declaration of war. However, they have lost contact with the killer, forcing the Jennings to hunt him down before he can complete his mission.

Philip and Elizabeth eventually track the assassin to a hotel. During a gunfight, Elizabeth tosses a bomb back at him, causing him to accidentally blow himself up. [S1E8] Allegiance

Despite the assassin's death, one of his traps succeeds. He had hidden a bomb inside an FBI agent's walkie-talkie, which detonates and kills a scientist along with three agents. The Centre tasks Philip and Elizabeth with stopping

To buy time and force the FBI to protect the targets, the Jennings plant a bomb in a scientist's car, making it easy to find so the FBI will move the scientists to safe houses. Philip and Elizabeth eventually track the assassin to
