The movement began in as a summer youth conference hosted by Bethel Church in Redding, California. Under the leadership of youth pastor Banning Liebscher , the goal was to help teenagers deepen their relationship with God through high-energy, "Spirit-soaked" worship.

Core members like and Chris Quilala were part of that original youth worship team. They weren't looking to become professional musicians; they simply wanted to capture the "presence of God" they felt during these conferences so students could take that experience home.
