Reyes rose to fame in the early 1970s, becoming a star by blending waltzes, Andean, and Afro-Peruvian styles. Her voice was described as shrill, impressive, and perfectly modulated, cutting through with immense emotional power.

One day before her death, on October 30, 1973, she requested composer Pedro Pacheco to write " Mi Última Canción " ("My Last Song") and sang it at a local radio station. Reyes rose to fame in the early 1970s,
