The project began in 2002 as a mod called Operation: Counter-Insurgency (OPCOIN), developed by Canadian Army veteran Andrew Spearin. Its success led to the formation of New World Interactive and the release of the standalone sequel, Insurgency (2014), and eventually Insurgency: Sandstorm (2018).
