At the end of the hall stood another soldier, facing away from him. The character model was incredibly detailed, wearing modern tactical gear, but it was completely stationary. It didn't breathe, fidget, or look around.

The file sat on Alex’s desktop, its icon a sterile, compressed stack of books labeled simply: Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 3.rar .

The soldier's head then slowly rotated a full 180 degrees to look directly at the screen. It didn't have a rendered face. Where the eyes, nose, and mouth should have been, there was only a swirling, chaotic vortex of black and white static. UPLOADING TO HOST

He tested the controls. The movement was sluggish, heavy, and disturbingly realistic. There was no heads-up display. No ammo counter, no mini-map, and no crosshairs in the center of the vision.
